Piano Lady

Wasn’t expecting live music
in a hospital cafeteria.
Just wanted a quick, cheap meal.

Imagine my surprise upon hearing a
nice lively piece, well-played and
pleasing to the ear.

I loaded my plate and found
a table where I could watch the
piano lady do her thing.

Her head shook,
her fingers flew,
her fat body swayed as
she rocked the keyboard,
lost in her music.

But no one seemed to notice.
Her audience was lost in its own world
of clattering forks and conversation.

I caught her eye and smiled;
she threw me back a crooked grin.
