The Pelican

Just back from a sunny Easter morning walk to a little neighborhood beach on a big lake. The Florida weather was warmer than usual, felt more like May than March.  Hadn’t really planned to end up there, my feet just led me. I sat myself on a little bench overlooking the water. It was all sparkly from the sun and the breeze kept it moving.

A few ducks were around, some flying overhead, some just perched on the water. Then a big pelican showed up. I love pelicans. Love to watch them dive. They’re so ungainly looking, but when they dive it’s a sight to behold. All that lumbering body tightened up into a nose dive, then splash!  He’d dive, then circle around, barely making headway against the wind at times, sometimes it looked like he was just floating on air. Then another dive. And another.

I’ve read of mystics who can actually send their consciousness into other creatures like that, become one with them. I almost felt that way about that pelican.
