Bird Resort

I’ve never seen a wildness so
alive with birds!
Pelicans sunning themselves in
treetops, stretching wings and
massive pouches, crowned with sun,
as on a penthouse roof–
and everywhere, in layers like a city tenement–
egrets, herons, ibis, cormorants, storks.
Some coming, some going,
some walking along the shore.
And always the invisible nestlings’
constant piping–hungry, relentless.
