Eloise Returns to Work after Chemo

She walks into my cubby
and we talk a while,
her hair growing back in curly wisps,
her fingernails blackened by chemo.

She looks fragile but clear-eyed
as if she’s gazed into the abyss, and
found it not so empty perhaps.
Eyes that hint of surrender–
if it comes to that.
