Into the Monster’s Mouth

Category Five.
A huge brute with a name
like a dainty ballerina.
Katrina.

Satellites show her massive
white bulk filling the Gulf—
beautiful, deadly–
howling north by northwest.
The Nation watches,
holding its breath.
Where will she point her evil-eye?
New Orleans?
Mississippi? Alabama?

Into this unstoppable Fury
my Two Sons are charging,
driven by hurricane-lust,
as moths toward a seducing flame.

Two brazen young warriors
armed with camera, laptop,
bravado and not much else–
daring to gaze into the Monster’s mouth
and laugh.
